Heavy-Lift Capabilities

The all-in-one platform for multi-mission performance

The S-64 Air Crane® helicopter has been uniquely qualified for heavy-lift, external load operations, and precision placement, in challenging locations with limited transportation options. For infrastructure development such as bridges, roads, dams, industrial facilities, HVAC, pipeline, or waterline projects — the S-64 can configure to meet your needs with minimal environmental impact.

The S-64 is a powerful and efficient aerial platform, and the only purpose-built flying crane in existence. Its unique design features an aft-facing pilot station, which gives the pilot full control of the helicopter and an unobstructed view while placing loads within inch/millimeter tolerances. Components such as the patented anti-rotational rigging system, hydraulic grapple, high-volume fixed fire suppression tank, and 30-45 second snorkel refill system enhance the S-64’s ability to perform effectively and efficiently, with an external load capacity of 25,000 lbs. (11,340 kg).

Timber Harvesting

Erickson was founded on revolutionizing the timber industry with the S-64 Air Crane® helicopter. It is a cost-effective and overall safer method of logging and harvesting wood. Timber is lifted vertically and flown, rather than skidded across the forest floor and causing damage to the vegetation.

The benefit of this state-of-the-art forest practice includes less damage to adjacent stands of trees, soil, and riparian areas — resulting in a healthier forest environment. Timber harvesting by helicopter saves substantial costs by minimizing the need for road construction and reducing the cost of falling, loading, and hauling the timber.

Infrastructure

The lift capacity and aft-facing pilot seat, paired with the anti-rotation device are all critical components for a heavy-lift, precision-based project such as powerline placement. The S-64, along with its skilled pilots and crew members, are the perfect aerial asset to perform an infrastructure project this big.

The S-64 Air Crane® helicopter has a lift capacity of up to 25,000 pounds (11,340 kilograms) and a unique aft-facing pilot station that allows teams to develop and execute a transmission line and infrastructure construction system that is cost-competitive compared to conventional methods.

HVAC & Construction

The S-64 Air Crane® aircraft is uniquely designed to aid in the delivery and installation of heavy-weight ventilation and air conditioning units. Precision and safety are critical when placing an HVAC onto hard-to-reach rooftops atop towering city high rises. Erickson has supported the placement more than 40,000 HVAC units with the S-64 onto skyscrapers, automobile plants, and hangars across North America and Europe.

Disaster Relief

Disaster relief efforts require a reliable and versatile aircraft that can swiftly navigate through challenging terrains and carry out critical operations. That’s where the S-64 Air Crane® helicopter comes into action. Packing powerful capabilities and advanced technology, the S-64 is a game-changer in disaster response. This remarkable helicopter is equipped to transport heavy loads, enabling the delivery of essential supplies, equipment, and even transport emergency vehicles to affected areas. Its substantial cargo capacity and diverse external load capabilities make it an invaluable asset for disaster relief missions. From firefighting to search and rescue operations, this helicopter is a reliable and efficient tool for critical response and recovery in the aftermath of disasters. With its exceptional performance, the S-64 is a true lifesaver in times of crisis.

1993 Statue of Freedom Project

Specialty “Out-of-the-box” Projects

The S-64 is also known for the unique, short-term projects that it’s performed over the years. Some of which include removing and reinstalling the Statue of Freedom atop the United States Capitol Dome, rescuing an endangered rhino from the jungles of Borneo, moving snow to the Vancouver B.C. Olympics, staging the Dream Chaser test flight, and relocating internationally acclaimed racing yachts. If there’s something heavy to be lifted and carefully placed, the S-64 Air Crane® helicopter can do it.
